About Polianthes

Polianthes are tuberous perennials that were discovered by explorers in Mexico during the 1500s and were returned to Europe, gaining huge popularity in Spain. Showy blooms are formed in impressive tufts on thick upright stems, often producing a sweet fragrance to greet passers-by during the summer. Due to their hardiness, they are best suited as cut flowers within the home or as container plants that can be transplanted to warmer environments during cold spells. You should expect to see Polianthes grow to an approximate height of 80cm (32”) and a spread of 20cm (8”).

How to plant Polianthes

Polianthes are best planted in well-drained soil of loam within a neutral PH balance. Plant your bulbs during the spring when all risk of frost has passed. Enrich the planting area with compost as this will increase the nutritional value and drainage of the soil. Place Polianthes bulbs 5-10cm (2-4”) deep and 15-20cm (6-8”) apart set in a sunny position.

How to care for Polianthes

Keep the soil consistently moist throughout active growth as this will aid in the plants overall health and development. After the flowering period, bulbs should be dug up or transplanted and stored over the winter period. This will protect them from frost damage. Continue to water Polianthes, taking care not to waterlog the soil. Feed with a liquid fertiliser every couple of weeks throughout active growth as this will encourage profuse blooming.

How to propagate Polianthes

It is possible to propagate Polianthes by seed or through offsets during the spring.
