About Polemonium

Polemonium are annuals or herbaceous perennial plants that fashion an upright spreading habit with pinnate leaves that form bushy clusters of abundant foliage. Glorious bell, tubular or funnel-shaped flowers sit upon slender stems in a variety of subtle and stunning colours. Polemonium are best suited to flower beds and borders within courtyard and informal garden settings. You should expect to see Polemonium grow to an approximate height of 30-45cm (12-18”) and a spread of 45-60cm (18-24”).

How to plant Polemonium

Polemonium are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of clay, loam, chalk and sand within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. They should be planted at a depth and width that matches the size of the root ball, spacing companion plants approximately 30cm (12”) apart to allow sufficient space to grow and develop. They thrive in cooler conditions and are best positioned in an area of part shade.

How to care for Polemonium

Provide Polemonium with a boost during spring by providing a dose of balanced fertiliser once new growth starts to emerge. Once the flowering period is over, cut the stalks back to the base as this will promote healthy blooms and foliage for the following season. If or when the foliage looks unkempt, you may wish to cut it back to retain a pleasing appearance.

How to propagate Polemonium

It is possible to propagate Polemonium by division during spring.
