Podranea are evergreen plants with lush, glossy foliage where each leaf is found in pairs with smaller leaflets adjoining them on each stem, creating a layered and textured effect. This mass of foliage is smothered by a profusion of funnel-shaped blooms throughout the summer. These stunning plants are best suited to containers or grown against a trellis, arch or feature within a cottage and informal garden setting. You should expect to see Podranea grow to an approximate height of 3m (10’).
Podranea are best planted in moist, well-drained soil. At the time of planting, amend the soil with a generous application of well-rotted compost mixing in well and watering thoroughly and deeply as this will produce the best foliage and blooming quality. Podranea are best positioned in an area of part shade where the roots and soil can be kept moist and cool.
Podranea are vigorous growers, so take care to ensure that they do not become invasive. You may wish to prune Podranea in late winter or early spring to keep the plant neat and to retain a healthy shape and structure – this will also improve the quality and abundance of flowering for the following year. These plants will need winter protection and so it is advisable that they are transplanted to a suitable environment such as a greenhouse or a conservatory until it is suitable to transplant them back into the garden.
