Plectranthus are annuals, evergreen perennials or shrubs with pale-green ovate or heart-shaped foliage with stunning spikes of flowers that form slender spikes throughout spring and summer. Plectranthus are best suited as patio and container plants in a cottage or informal garden setting. You should expect to see Plectranthus grow to an approximate height of 2.5m (8’) and a spread of 1m (3’).
Plectranthus are best planted in well-drained soil of loam or sand within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. They are best kept under the shade of trees although will tolerate a sheltered area of full sun. Plant out into the garden when all risk of frost has passed and dig a hole that is twice the width as the root ball, and a depth that is level with the native soil. Back fill and water thoroughly.
Plectranthus are easy to grow and low maintenance once mature. They are shallow rooted, performing best with plentiful water although the stems will retain moisture to help during periods of drought. Shrubby species make denser shrubs if they are pruned back to between 1/3 and 1/4 of their height. This should be undertaken towards the end of winter before any new growth appears. After pruning, supplement the soil with a thick layer of compost.
