Pimpinella are annuals, biennials or herbaceous perennials with delicate umbels of flat headed blooms, held upon upright wiry stems and mounds of long, finely cut foliage. They are perfect when planted alongside Roses, Allium or Salvia. Pimpinella are best suited to flower beds and borders within cottage, informal and wildflower garden settings. You should expect to see Pimpinella grow to an approximate height of 1.2m (4’) and a spread of 60cm (24”).
Pimpinella are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of sand, chalk, loam and clay within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. Pimpinella should be planted 30cm (12”) apart and dug at the same width and depth as the root ball, watering thoroughly and deeply to settle the soil into place. Pimpinella should be positioned in an area of full sun or part shade.
Pimpinella should be watered regularly until they become better established, although they do thrive with a consistent level of moisture in the soil. Water will also be required during prolonged periods of drought. You may wish to apply a generous amount of fertiliser prior to the flowering period just before summer as this will encourage prolific blooming and better foliage performance.
It is possible to propagate Pimpinella by seed or by division during the spring.
