About Phyteuma

Phyteuma are unusual perennial plants with an intriguing flower that is spiky in appearance, closely resembling a medieval battle-axe. They are often known as the ‘Oxford’ or ‘Horned Rampion’. Phyteuma are held on slender, wiry stems below attractive mounds of evergreen foliage. Phyteuma are best suited to a rock garden, planted in containers or borders. You should expect to see Phyteuma grow to an approximate height and spread 30-40cm (12-16”).

How to plant Phyteuma

Phyteuma are best planted in well-drained soil of loam, sand and chalk within a neutral or alkaline PH balance. You may wish to amend heavy soil with a generous amount of organic matter to improve overall drainage. Phyteuma are best positioned in a sheltered or exposed area of full sunlight. Dig a hole that is the same depth and twice the width of your plant, spreading the roots out before settling into place. Space companion plants 40cm (16”) apart to allow room for plants to spread as they mature to create a striking, bushy effect. After planting, water thoroughly and deeply.

How to care for Phyteuma

Once established, Phyteuma are easy to care for and maintain. Water Phyteuma regularly during active growth and throughout periods of drought. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage a second flush of blooms.

How to propagate Phyteuma

It is possible to propagate Phyteuma by seed or alternatively by division.
