About Phyllostachys

Phyllostachys are ornamental, clump-forming, evergreen bamboos with leafy branches and grooved canes that create dynamic architecture within your garden and set on your patio. This elegant and low maintenance bamboo can be grown outside, making an impressive feature for a pot or used to create unique and attractive hedging. You should expect to see Phyllostachys grow to an approximate height of 5m (16’) and a spread of 3m (10’).

How to plant Phyllostachys

Phyllostachys are best planted in moist, well-drained soil, ideally loam based within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. They can thrive in poorer soils but dislike boggy or consistently wet or dry conditions. Spring is often the recommended time to plant Phyllostachys as this will make for stronger and healthier new canes in the summer. Choose an appropriate site that will accommodate its mature height and spread. Before planting, amend your soil with well-rotted garden compost or manure as this will enhance growing conditions and improve moisture retention. When planting, the root ball should sit so that there is about 2-3cm (1”) of soil covering the surface and watered thoroughly and accordingly. Phyllostachys are best positioned in an area of full sun or part shade.

How to care for Phyllostachys

Phyllostachys are low maintenance additions to the garden. Water Phyllostachys thoroughly during periods of drought and at a moderate level otherwise. They will require a balanced fertiliser throughout active growth until late August alongside a high level of nitrogen during spring. There is no need to cut back Phyllostachys as the foliage provides vital strength and stability, although during spring you should remove any dead, weak or damaged canes, cutting them back to ground level.

How to propagate Phyllostachys

It is possible to propagate Phyllostachys by division during spring.
