Phuopsis are perennial plants with globe-shaped bloom heads and whorls of highly fragrant, star-shaped leaves that are prominent during late spring and autumn. They are more commonly referred to as ‘Creeping Crosswort’ and are useful plants for groundcover, slopes and banks or set within the front of a border. You should expect to see Phuopsis grow to an approximate height of 20cm (8”) and a spread of 45-60cm (18-24”). This plant is native to hillsides and woodland areas within the Caucasus Mountains of Asia and Iran.
Phuopsis are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of loam, chalk and sand within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. Dig a hole as wide and deep as the root ball and gently lower Phuopsis into place, backfilling the planting area with native soil. Water thoroughly and deeply to settle the soil, encouraging the development of a healthy root system. They are best planted in areas of full sun although will equally thrive in a position of part shade.
Cut back Phuopsis after the flowering period as this will maintain a compact habit with improved growth for the following season. Phuopsis has a habit of spreading and so you may need to manage your plants carefully if they become invasive. Water well throughout active growth, increasing volumes during periods of drought and decreasing volumes during winter.
