About Photinia

Photinia are evergreen or deciduous shrubs or trees with simplistic foliage and small clusters of white or pale flowers. These are often followed by voluptuous red berries. Photinia are best suited to flower beds or borders within a courtyard, cottage or informal garden setting. You should expect your Photinia to grow to an approximate height of 8-12 metres (26-40) and a spread of 4-8 metres (13-26).

How to plant Photinia

Plant Photinia in well-drained soil of clay, loam and sand within an acidic or neutral PH balance. Grow Photinia plants in a sunny or semi shaded position. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost into the soil and insert at the same depth they were planted in. Backfill the planting hole and water well to settle the soil.

How to care for Photinia

Provide Photinia with an annual trim as this is essential to encourage side branching and to maintain density. Apply a feed annually, generally during April. A general fertiliser, such as Fish, Blood & Bonemeal will enhance the appearance and colour of the foliage. If necessary, repeat this in mid-summer. Water during periods of prolonged dry periods and ensure the soil does not dry out too much.

How to propagate Photinia

It is possible to propagate Photinia by semi-hardwood cuttings during the summer. Alternatively, you may also propagate by seed sown in containers during autumn.
