Phaseolus are annual herbaceous plants that are related to the legume and bean family, native to central and south America. Unique and intriguing snail-like flowers are flecked with vibrant colour throughout the summer. Large, dark green foliage support these fascinating flowers where cylindrical fruits often follow once your blooms fade. Phaseolus are best suited to flower beds, borders or containers within a cottage or informal garden setting. You should expect to see Phaseolus grow to an approximate height and spread of 3m (10’).
Phaseolus are best planted in well-drained soil in a position of full sun. At the time of planting, add a generous layer of compost as this will help them to grow to their optimum height and spread at a faster rate. Ensure there is plenty of space between planting to accommodate your plants mature size.
Phaseolus may require support in the form of a trellis or archway to retain a healthy structure as they grow and develop. Keep the soil relatively moist especially during periods of drought. Just before the stated blooming period, you may wish to apply a high phosphorous fertiliser as this will promote accelerated and healthy growth.
It is possible to propagate Phaseolus by taking cuttings during the spring. Alternatively, seed can easily be collected where plants will grow in their first year.
