About Petunia

Petunia are annual or perennial plants with modest leaves and large distinctive blooms that appear from late spring to autumn, flourishing with abundance over lush bushy foliage. It is recommended that they are planted in pots and containers, although will look fantastic amongst companion shrubs in flower beds and borders within courtyard and informal garden settings. You should expect to see Petunia grow to an approximate height of 20cm (8”) and 30cm (12”).

How to plant Petunia

Petunia are best planted in well-drained soil of loam and sand within a neutral, acidic or alkaline PH balance. Apply a layer of organic matter such as chopped leaves or shredded bark to the planting hole. This will suppress weeds and retain vital moisture whilst your plants are still young. Petunia are best positioned in an area of full sun with shelter from drying winds although they will also tolerate part shade if necessary.

How to care for Petunia

Petunia will require regular fertilisation – this should be applied to the plant with a balanced water soluble feed as this will encourage profuse blossom. Petunia requires regular watering as their roots tend to dry out very quickly. If the soil is rich in organic matter or has mulch applied, watering will be required on a lesser scale. Remove any spent blooms and deadhead regularly to promote bountiful growth. If Petunias are left to go to seed, it will decrease the rate of blooming.

How to propagate Petunia

It is possible to propagate Petunia by seed during early spring.
