Pennisetum are annuals, perennials and evergreen or deciduous grasses that will either clump or spread in habit. Slender leaves majestically arch and sway with stunning bristly flowering panicles. They are best suited to flower beds and borders within a courtyard, cottage and informal garden setting. You can even use Pennisetum as part of a cut flower arrangement. You should expect to see your plants grow to an approximate height of 90cm (35”) and a spread of 60cm (24”).
Pennisetum are best planted in well-drained soil of sand, chalk and loam within an acidic, alkaline and neutral PH balance. Dig a hole that is twice the depth and width of your plant and position in place securely, back filling the soil and watering thoroughly. They are best positioned in a sheltered area of full sun although they will tolerate part shade.
Ensure you do not over water your plants, especially whilst they are young. Once Pennisetum are mature, they are generally drought tolerant although you will need to supply additional water during sustained periods of dry weather. Cut your plants back at the end of winter and move to a suitable place where it will not be damaged by cold weather.
