Paulownia are deciduous trees, native to Eastern America. Large, oval-shaped leaves and stately stems of foxglove-like flowers, blossom profusely during the spring. Some species will ooze a heavenly scent, often producing voluptuous, small fruits in winter. Paulownia are best suited to flower beds and borders within a cottage and informal garden setting. You should expect to see your plants grow to an approximate height and spread of 10m (32’).
Paulownia are best planted in well-drained soil of sand although they will tolerate loam, clay and chalk if amended with compost within an acidic, alkaline and neutral PH setting. It is recommended to keep Paulownia protected from adverse weather conditions and so you may wish to stake your tree whilst young to protect it from exposed areas. Paulownia prefer a position of full sun as this is where they will thrive best.
Paulownia should be watered thoroughly during periods of sustained dry weather. It is recommended to cut Paulownia to the ground every year during late winter or early spring. You may also wish to prune the branches and foliage back to the trunk. Fertilise Paulownia annually whilst they are still young as this will encourage better and profuse growth.
