About Parthenocissus

Parthenocissus are more commonly known as ‘Virginia Creeper’. They are vigorous, deciduous climbers with deeply lobed or palmate leaves that display striking rich colour during autumn. Green, unobtrusive flowers are often followed by beautiful blue or black berries. These stunning climbers look fantastic along wall side borders and will grow to an approximate height of 10m (30’) and a spread of 4m (13’). PLEASE NOTE – The berries grown on Parthenocissus are poisonous and must not be ingested.

How to plant Parthenocissus

Parthenocissus are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of chalk, clay, sand and loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. Use plant ties to help your plant climb up a vertical surface. Alternatively, you can train it to act as suitable groundcover, much like ivy. They are best positioned in an area of full sun or part shade, although the roots would benefit from cool or full shade.

How to care for Parthenocissus

Parthenocissus require very little attention throughout active growth. You will need to water your climbers on a regular basis during extended periods of drought although they are tolerant to short periods of warm and dry weather. Parthenocissus are vigorous and robust, however they will grow thicker with annual fertilisation. You will need to occasionally prune your climber as if left, it will grow to a substantial size - an annual trim will maintain a manageable shape.

How to propagate Parthenocissus

It is possible to propagate Parthenocissus by layering or hardwood cuttings
