Nicotiana are annuals, biennials, perennials or shrubs with simple, foliage and tubular or saucer-shaped flowers that are borne in summer or autumn. They are best used as cut flowers within flower beds or borders within a cottage and informal garden. You should expect to see Prostanthera grow to an approximate height of 1-1.5m (3-5’) and a spread of 10-50cm (4-20”).
Nicotiana are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of loam, chalk or clay within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. Enrich the planting area with a generous amount of compost. Plant your Nicotiana to the same depth and width as the root ball and water thoroughly to settle the soil into place. Site your plants in an area that will attract part shade or full shade.
Keep plants well-watered and fertilise on a monthly basis. Ensure that you remove weeds from flower beds. Prune Nicotiana lightly once the flowers start to fade, as this will retain a neat and tidy shape and promote further flowering.
It is possible to propagate Nicotiana by seed.
