About Muscari

Muscari are bulbous perennials with strap-shaped leaves and compact tubular flowers that resemble bunches of grapes during spring and early summer. The name originates from the Greek word for ‘musk’ which relates to the heavenly fragrance they emanate. They are ideal for banks and slopes, flower beds and borders within coastal, courtyard and informal gardens. They will equally charm in containers and pots. You should expect to see Muscari grow to an approximate height and spread of 15cm (6”).

How to plant Muscari

Muscari should be planted in moist, well-drained soil of chalk, clay, sand or loam set within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH setting. They will not tolerate extreme soil conditions so ensure that they are not placed in an area that is either too wet or too dry. These plants should be placed 10cm (4”) deep during autumn and positioned 15 cm apart (6”) – grouping these together to make an impressive statement. Muscari are best positioned in an area of full sun although they will tolerate part shade.

How to care for Muscari

Muscari do not require much attention once they have been planted. They do not require any fertiliser or feed but will need watering so that the soil is kept consistently moist. After the flowering period, you may wish to cut back the spent foliage in autumn to retain a neat and tidy structure until the following season.

How to propagate Muscari

It is possible to propagate Muscari by seed sown during the autumn time. Alternatively, you can propagate Muscari by division although these offsets will take a further year to develop until you see any flowers.
