Mukgenia are a stunning intergeneric cross between Bergenia and Mukdenia. Tall dark stems hold attractive clusters of bright pink flowers throughout spring. Compact mounds of glittering, leather foliage fashion a textured, serrated edging and bright vivid shades of red and orange to produce fantastic autumnal colour. They are best positioned under dense tree canopies or as underplanting for companion plants and shrubs. Alternatively, they will make highly attractive container plants. You should expect to see Mukgenia grow to an approximate height and spread of 30-40cm (12-16”).
Mukgenia are best planted in moist, well-drained soil within a sheltered site of full sunlight or part shade. Amend the planting area with compost to improve the overall drainage whilst supplementing the existing soil. Dig a hole that is as deep and as wide as the root ball. Carefully place your Mukgenia into the planting hole and water thoroughly and deeply to encourage a healthy root system.
You should keep the soil consistently moist whilst they are young as Mukgenia has little tolerance for dry conditions. No pruning is necessary but you may wish to remove any old or dying foliage to retain a healthy and pleasing appearance.
