About Mitraria

Mitraria are an evergreen perennial shrub, often found in the rainforests of Chile. It can often be referred to as the mitre flower and will display a plethora of glossy, dark green leaves that are neatly arranged along woody stems. Gorgeous, velvety flowers appear during spring and summer, creeping and climbing in all directions. Mitraria are best planted in wall side borders within city and courtyard gardens. You should expect to see your shrubs grow to an approximate height and spread of 1.5-2.5m (5-8’).

How to plant Mitraria

Mitraria are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of loam within an acidic PH balance. At the time of planting, it is recommended that the soil is amended with a generous amount of compost. Dig a hole that is as deep as the root ball and twice as wide, spreading the roots out before inserting into the planting area. Ensure there is plenty of space for your Mitraria to grow to its ultimate spread and height. Water thoroughly and deeply to settle your shrub in place. Mitraria are best positioned in an area of part shade.

How to care for Mitraria

You should aim to keep the soil evenly moist whilst your shrubs are in active growth. Do not let your Mitraria sit in dry or waterlogged soil. They are best kept in an area that receives part shade where they will have access to the sun without the exposure of intense midday heat. During periods of active growth, you should feed your Mitraria with a slow-release fertiliser and neaten your shrub by removing older stems. You may also wish to train Mitraria to a trellis or fence once they reach a suitable height. Alternatively, let them trail along the ground to produce divine groundcover.

How to propagate Mitraria

It is possible to propagate Mitraria by stem cuttings or alternatively by seed during the summer.
