Dressed in eight-inch-long Wisteria-like panicles, a mature specimen can be a pure delight to witness in flower from August to December. Blooms are equally scented but far more eye-catching. Dark purple and maroon flowers fashion vibrant yellow centres. Millettia are suited to flower beds, borders and containers within a cottage or tropical garden setting. You should expect to see Millettia grow to an approximate height and spread of 3m (10’).
Millettia are best suited to well-drained soil of clay or loam within an acidic or neutral PH balance. They are best positioned in an area of full sun or part shade. Ensure to insert a sturdy support for your plant to climb unless you wish for it to sprawl in habit as it matures.
Growing up to 15ft in one season, prune at will, but plant in a site which can support its weight. It’s ideal over sturdy pergolas displaying a thick covering of glossy semi-evergreen leaves. Heavily mulch crown with leaf mould in winter to provide extra weather protection. In cold winters the leaves may drop off and stems may die back. Mulch around the root crown over the winter to ensure you get a strong, healthy plant in spring.
