About Melittis

Melittis are low maintenance perennial plants with bushy sage-green and exquisite honey-scented foliage. Clusters of delicately coloured orchid-like blooms are fixed upon tall stems throughout late spring and early summer. They are best suited to flower beds and borders within wildlife, cottage and informal garden settings. You should expect to see Melittis grow to an approximate height and spread of 35-40cm (14-16”).

How to plant Melittis

Melittis are best planted in well-drained soil. It is recommended to amend heavy soils with a generous application of organic matter as this will hugely benefit the performance of your plants. Dig a hole that is as deep as the root ball and twice as wide, spreading the roots into position as you gently lower Melittis into place. Water thoroughly and deeply to settle the soil and to encourage a healthy and well-established root system. Melittis are best positioned in part shade where they have refuge from intense summer heat.

How to care for Melittis

Melittis will need to be watered regularly during periods of drought until they are fully established. Cut back old growth during the spring when new foliage can be seen at the base of the plant. There is no requirement for any supplements or feed.

How to propagate Melittis

It is possible to propagate Melittis by division during spring once this plant is fully established.
