Maianthemum are rhizomatous perennial plants with slender stems that bear lush ovate foliage and small star-shaped flowers that cluster together to make attractive spires. Flowers are followed by gorgeous red berries during the autumn. Maianthemum are best suited to flower beds or borders or as underplanting of larger shrubs and small trees. You can expect to see Maianthemum grow to an approximate height and spread of 50cm-1m (20-40“).
Maianthemum are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of clay, loam or sand within an acidic or neutral PH balance. Maianthemum thrives in a position of part or full shade, making it an ideal plant for a woodland garden. Ensure you choose a site that is not open to adverse weather conditions, and shelter from cold winds. Plant to the same depth and width of the root ball, watering thoroughly to settle into place.
Maianthemum are a low maintenance plant, preferring to be kept relatively moist throughout active growth. You may wish to prune to retain a neat, controlled and tidy shape. Otherwise Maianthemum should not require pruning.
It is possible to propagate Maianthemum by seed sown in pots in a cold frame during autumn. Alternatively, you can propagate by division of rhizomes during spring.
