Lythrum are annual or herbaceous perennials with modest, delicate leaves and equally compact and glorious star-shaped blooms. These blooms are fixed upon stately, slender stems which provide vital structure to the overall architecture of your garden. They are best suited to flower beds and borders within cottage, informal and wildflower meadows. You should expect to see Lythrum grow to an approximate height of 80cm (32”) and a spread of 50cm (20”).
Lythrum are best planted in moist soil of clay and loam within a neutral, acidic or alkaline PH balance. Before planting, amend your soil with garden compost or well rotten manure. This will improve the overall drainage of your plants and improve whilst improving growing conditions. They are best positioned in an area with access to full sunlight although you will need to ensure the soil is kept consistently moist.
Lythrum should be watered on a regular basis as they thrive best in moist soil conditions, especially during periods of sustained dry and warm weather. This should continue until the plant is well established. Ensure that you cut back old growth during the spring when new growth is visible at the base of the plant.
It is possible to propagate Lythrum by division during the spring.
