Lysimachia are herbaceous or evergreen perennial plants, native to China and Japan with modest, clump forming foliage and star, cup or bowl-shaped flowers that are fixed into attractive clusters, closely resembling feather dusters. Lysimachia are best suited to flower beds and borders within courtyard, cottage and informal garden settings. You should expect to see Lysimachia grow to an approximate height of 1.2m (4’) and a spread of 45cm (18”).
Lysimachia are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of clay, chalk, sand or loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. They are best positioned in an area of full sunlight or part shade. Dig a hole that is the same depth and twice the width of the root ball – make sure that you spread the roots before lowering into the ground. Once in place, back fill with native soil and water thoroughly and deeply.
You may need to stake your plants to provide support for the flower spikes, especially in exposed areas or regions prone to high winds. Apply a generous layer of mulch, compost or manure around the base of the plant during the spring to retain moisture levels and to deter weeds. Ensure you keep the soil moist and do not let your plants dry out in periods of sustained hot weather and drought.
