Lycoris are bulbous perennial plants that produce slender strap-shaped foliage and umbels of gorgeous funnel-shaped flowers. Lycoris are best suited to flower beds or borders within a city, courtyard, cottage or informal garden. Alternatively, they are ideal when grown as container plants. You can expect to see Lycoris grow to an approximate height and spread of 50cm-1m (20-40“).
Lycoris are best planted in well-drained soil of chalk, loam or sand within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance, thriving in a position of full sun. Amend your soil with plenty of organic matter to improve the drainage. Dig a hole and place your bulbs so that their necks are above the soil level and 12 inches apart. Make sure the pointed end is facing upwards. After planting water thoroughly to settle into place.
Water Lycoris when necessary during active growth and during periods of drought. Remove foliage as it starts to wilt. When the leaves die back the bulbs have entered dormancy. During this time you should withhold from watering.
It is possible to propagate Lycoris by seed sown with moderate heat when ripe.
