Lotus can be annuals, perennials, deciduous or evergreen shrubs. They are bushy in habit and have pea-like flowers that bloom in spring/summer. They are native to a range of areas including both coastal and mountainous environments. They are not to be confused with the Indian or Sacred Lotus, which are aquatic plants that are not closely related. You should expect to see your Lotus grow to an approximate height and spread of up to 50cm (20in).
Lotus are best planted in well-drained soil in loam, chalk or clay within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. They are perfect for planting in a wildflower meadow style garden. Lotus are best suited to either an exposed or sheltered area in full sun. They are intolerant of high levels of Nitrogen. Makes great fast-growing groundcover and can be grown in containers too.
Deadhead the flowers quickly to help keep the clumps smaller and to avoid the plant getting out of control, as Lotus is a fast-growing plant. Cut to the ground in the spring to encourage compact bushy growth.
It is possible to propagate Lotuss by seed at any time of the year.
