About Libertia

Libertia are perennial plants, native to New Zealand that fashion a clump forming habit, sword-shaped and grass-like evergreen foliage and saucer-shaped petals that are followed by glossy orange seed capsules. Libertia are highly attractive when placed in flower beds and borders, or used as under planting for rose bushes and shrubs within a variety of garden styles and settings. Libertia will grow to an approximate height of 90cm (36”) and a spread of 60cm (24”).

How to plant Libertia

Libertia are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of sand, loam and chalk within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. You may wish to amend the planting area with a generous amount of organic matter to improve overall drainage and growing conditions. Dig a hole that is the same depth and width as the root ball and space companion plants 50cm (20”) apart. Libertia are best positioned in an area with access to full sunlight although they will tolerate part shade if necessary.

How to care for Libertia

Cut out any old foliage to reveal any impending new growth. Do not overwater your plants as they will not tolerate water-logged soil. You may wish to leave any spent flower heads as this will create an attractive ornamental feature in the form of coloured seed heads which self seed if left.

How to propagate Libertia

It is possible to propagate Libertia by seed sown in pots once they are ripe or by division during the spring.
