Leycesteria are deciduous shrubs with attractive slender and hollow stems, simplistic spiky leaves and long pendants of tubular flowers. These flowers are often followed on with fleshy berries that are edible – it has been said that they taste much like toffee although we have not tried them personally. Leycesteria are often referred to as Himalayan Honeysuckle, flowering nutmeg, granny’s curls or pheasant berry. These shrubs are best suited to low maintenance, coastal, cottage or informal garden settings. You should expect to see Leycesteria grow to an approximate height of 2m (6.5’) and a spread of 90cm (3’).
Leycesteria are best planted in well-drained soil of chalk, clay, loam and sand within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. Dig a hole that is twice the depth and width of the plants root ball and amend the soil with compost. Place your plant into position. Firm the soil and water thoroughly and deeply. Apply a 3-4-inch layer of mulch to the base of the plant as this will help to retain moisture levels and suppress weeds. Leycesteria should be positioned in an area of full sun or part shade.
Stems should be cut back during their first spring after planting to produce a tidy clump close to ground level. Old, diseased and damaged plants will require severe pruning during the winter to retain a neat and tidy structure. It is recommended that you should apply a layer of mulch every 2-3 years to increase nutritional value within your soil.
