About Lewisia

Lewisia are herbaceous or evergreen perennial plants that are native to western America. They form flat, large fleshy leaves with stunning funnel-shaped flowers that are displayed in varying shades of divine colour during spring and summer. Lewisia are best suited as patio and container plants within rock gardens. You should expect to see Lewisia grow to an approximate height and spread of 50cm (20”).

How to plant Lewisia

Lewisia are best planted in well-drained soil of loam and sand within an acidic or neutral PH balance. Amend the planting area with plenty of fine gravel or grit to improve the overall drainage of the native soil. Lewisia prefer cooler climates, where they should be grown in part shade.

How to care for Lewisia

Lewisia will need sufficient protection from winter moisture as excessive wet will damage the roots. Provide a monthly feed during the growing season using half strength all purpose fertiliser. If watered regularly, many hybrid varieties will flourish two to four times further during the growing season.

How to propagate Lewisia

It is possible to propagate Lewisia by seed in autumn or by removing offsets during early summer.
