Lespedeza are annual, perennial or deciduous sub-shrubs, native to Japan and China. Neat and dense foliage sit beneath bundles of delicate pea-shaped blooms that form an elegant yet subtle arch. Some varieties of Lespedeza are incredibly fragrant and will provide optimum colour and scent during the autumn months. They are best suited to wall side borders within a cottage and informal garden setting. You should expect to see these plants grow to an approximate height and spread of 1.5m (60”).
Lespedeza are best planted in well-drained soil of chalk, sand or loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. The best time to plant Lespedeza is during spring where they will succeed best in a sheltered or exposed position of full sun or alternatively in part shade.
Lespedeza are relatively low maintenance and require little attention once established – They are drought tolerant but will require deep watering during prolonged periods of hot, dry weather. There is no need to fertilise your shrub, as this will cause harm to your plants. Pruning should only be undertaken to control its overall structure and to remove dead growth.
