Leontopodium are herbaceous perennials with clusters of small yellowish-white flowers that look and feel much like felt. They have stems and thin leaves that look powdery white. Leontopodium make a fantastic feature when planted in rock or gravel gardens. You should expect to see your Leontopodium grow to an approximate height of 50cm (20”) and a spread of 1m (40”).
Leontopodium are best planted in well-drained soil of chalk, loam and sand within an alkaline or neutral PH setting. They are best positioned in a site which has access to full sun or part shade. Dig a hole that will accommodate the depth and width of your plant. You may wish to amend the planting area with a generous amount of organic matter and mix thoroughly. Water well once in place to settle the surrounding soil.
Leontopodium are easy to care, requiring little maintenance. They are incredibly hardy and will not need additional protection from cold conditions. In its native conditions, Leontopodium is exposed to scouring winds and freezing temperatures. Once established, it rarely needs water and additional moisture is not required until the colder months are over.
It is possible to propagate Leontopodium by seed.
