About Lavatera

Lavatera are annual, biennial or perennial subshrubs with elongated and palmately lobed leaves and bushy foliage that bear large hollyhock-like flowers. They are best suited to flower beds and borders within courtyard, cottage and informal garden settings. You should expect to see Lavatera grow to an approximate height and spread of 1.8m (6’).

How to plant Lavatera

Lavatera are best planted in well-drained soil of chalk, clay, sand and loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. You may wish to amend the planting area with a generous amount of organic matter as this will not only improve the overall drainage of your soil but will increase nutritional value. They are best positioned in an area that has access to full sunlight as this is where they will perform best.

How to care for Lavatera

Pruning is best undertaken in early to mid spring, once all signs of frost have passed and when you can see the stem slightly bulging, as this is where a new shoot is developing. Undertaking a hard, annual prune will promote significant growth and an abundance of flowers. Apply a regular feed and water throughout active growth, especially during periods of drought.

How to propagate Lavatera

It is possible to propagate Lavatera by softwood cuttings during spring or summer.
