Kolkwitzia are best planted in a well-drained soil of chalk, clay, sand or loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. They are best positioned in an area of full sun or part shade. Kolkwitzia are well suited to flower beds and borders within low maintenance, cottage and informal garden settings.

Dig a hole that is the same depth and width as the root ball and spread the roots out before placing your shrub into the planting area. Back fill with the native soil and water thoroughly.
Hard pruning can be undertaken in late winter or once the flowering period is over as they tend to become dense and overgrown if not tidied regularly. This should only apply to mature plants- younger plants should be pruned to at least a third of their length. You may wish to apply a layer of mulch around the base of your shrub during active growth to retain moisture levels and suppress weeds.
It is possible to propagate Kolkwitzia by semi-hardwood cuttings.
