About Kniphofia

Kniphofia are evergreen or herbaceous perennials with strap-shaped foliage and tall upright stems that fashion unique, tubular flowers to form a cone-like figure. These colourful blooms add a striking and noble structure amongst smaller, companion plants. Kniphofia are best suited to flower beds and borders within courtyard and informal garden settings. You should expect to see Kniphofia grow to an approximate height of 1.2m (4’) and a spread of 60cm (24”).

How to plant Kniphofia

Kniphofia are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of loam and sand within an acidic or neutral PH balance. Enrich the native soil with humus as this will provide crucial nutritional value to the planting area. They are best positioned in a site that has access to full sunlight as this is where they will thrive best.

How to care for Kniphofia

Apply an annual mulch around the base of your plant, taking care to avoid the foliage. Young plants should be given extra protection with straw or dry leaves when cold temperatures arise. Remove dead or dying leaves as you see them alongside spent flower spikes during spring.

How to propagate Kniphofia

It is possible to propagate Kniphofia by dividing mature plants during late spring.
