Enrich the native soil with humus as this will provide crucial nutritional value to the planting area.
Apply an annual mulch around the base of your plant, taking care to avoid the foliage. Young plants should be given extra protection with straw or dry leaves when temperatures are cold. Remove dead or drying leaves as you see them alongside spent flower spikes in spring.
It is possible to propagate Kniphofia by dividing mature plants in late spring.
