About Knautia

Knautia are annual or perennial plants, native to central Europe. These beautiful plants display large pin-cushion like blooms with a large central cone surrounded by a border of ornamental petals, much like a Scabiosa. These unique and intriguing blooms sit neatly upon long slender stems and often variegated wing-like foliage that flourish throughout the summer months. They are best suited to flower beds and borders within cottage, informal and prairie style gardens. They will also make a great addition as cut flowers within the home. You should expect to see Knautia grow to an approximate height of 1m (3’) and a spread of 50cm (20”).

How to plant Knautia

Knautia are best planted in well-drained soil of loam, chalk or sand within an alkaline or neutral PH balance. Good drainage is essential and so it is recommended to amend the planting area with plenty of organic matter and grit. Site Knautia in an area where your plants can expand to its mature height and spread and water thoroughly once set into position. Knautia should be planted in an area that receives full sun with an element of shelter from intense midday heat.

How to care for Knautia

Some varieties of Knautia may require staking to retain a healthy and pleasing appearance as they develop and grow. Cut Knautia back to the ground during the autumn as this will encourage profuse and strong growth for the following season. Mulch with well-rotted manure or compost during the autumn and water thoroughly.

How to propagate Knautia

It is possible to propagate Knautia by seed or basal cuttings during the spring.
