Knautia are best planted in a well-drained soil of loam, chalk or sand within an alkaline or neutral PH balance. They are best positioned in an area that receives full sun with some shelter from midday heat. Knautia are well suited to flower beds and borders within cottage, informal and prairie style gardens.

Amend the planting area with plenty of organic matter ad grit to improve drainage. Make sure you site the plants in an area where your plants can expand to their mature height and spread, and water thoroughly once planted.
Some varieties may need staking to retain a healthy and pleasing appearance as they develop and grow. Cut back to the ground during autumn to encourage better growth for the following season. Mulch will well-rotted manure or compost during autumn and water thoroughly.
It is possible to propagate Knautia by seed or basal cuttings in spring.
