About Kirengeshoma

Kirengeshoma are rhizomatous perennial plants, native to Japan and Korea where it would grow in damp woodland areas. It has been cultivated in Britain for over a century. Attractive lobed leaves and sprays of tubular flowers resemble yellow trumpets as they arch and nod in the wind. They will display a magnificent clump forming habit that will accentuate impressively tall and slender stems. Kirengeshoma are best suited to flower beds and borders within an informal and cottage garden setting. You should expect to see your plants grow to an approximate height of 1.2m (4’) and a spread of 50cm (20”).

How to plant Kirengeshoma

Kirengeshoma are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of sand, loam and clay within an acidic PH balance. These plants are intolerant to lime based soil. Enrich the planting area with leaf mould and keep the soil moist as this will increase the performance of this plant as it matures. Kirengeshoma are best positioned in an area of full shade or part shade and kept sheltered from high winds and adverse weather conditions.

How to care for Kirengeshoma

Water Kirengeshoma thoroughly and deeply during periods of dry weather and use a balanced liquid fertiliser sparingly to improve flowering performance and quality. You may wish to remove dead, diseased and damaged foliage and cut the stems back to the ground in late autumn to promote healthy future growth.

How to propagate Kirengeshoma

It is possible to propagate Kirengeshoma by seed sown in pots within a cold frame during spring. Alternatively, you can propagate by division as soon as growth begins during spring.
