About Jasmine

Jasmine are exquisite climbers with varieties suitable for growth in both summer and in winter, producing sweet, delicate fragrance. Common Jasmine have large glossy green leaves and delicate star-shaped white, pink or yellow flowers. These can be followed by attractive black fruits. Jasmine are best suited to wall-side borders or used as groundcover. Alternatively, Jasmine look great for container planting. You should expect to see Jasmine grow to an approximate height and spread of 3-5m (10-15’).

How to plant Jasmine

Jasmine are best planted in well-drained soil of sand, clay, chalk and loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. Varieties that grow during the summer are best positioned in a sheltered area of full sun. Winter flowering jasmine are best positioned in part shade as this is where they will thrive to optimum effect. Some varieties may need a support structure in place to retain healthy growth as they develop.

How to care for Jasmine

Water your plants freely during spring and summer, reducing the volume of water required in winter. Plants that are placed in containers require a monthly high potassium feed (such as a tomato fertiliser) as this will provide additional nutritional value. Summer Jasmine are best pruned after they flower during late summer or early autumn. Winter Jasmine are best pruned in spring when all flowering has ceased. This will provide, healthy new growth into maturity as they develop and flower for the following season.

How to propagate Jasmine

It is possible to propagate Jasmine by layering or from cuttings. Varieties that are grown outdoors are best propagated by hardwood cuttings that can be taken during the winter. All other varieties would benefit from softwood cuttings or semi-ripe cuttings taken in spring or summer.
