Iresine are annuals or evergreen perennials, native to Brazil with simple, ovate foliage that is usually brightly coloured or patterned with small clusters of white flowers during the summer. These showy plants and soft, supple stems are a great addition to any planting scheme. As most varieties are tender, they are best suited to containers where they can be easily transplanted when frost is imminent. You should expect to see Iresine grow to an approximate height and spread of between 45-60cm (18-24”).
Iresine are best planted in well-drained soil of loam, chalk, clay and sand within an acidic, neutral or alkaline PH balance. Iresine are best positioned in an area of full sun. Amend heavy soils with a generous amount of organic matter and mix thoroughly to improve drainage and growing conditions. Set plants out once all signs of frost have passed. Dig a hole that is the same depth and twice the width of your plant, spreading the roots out before settling into place. Space companion plants 60cm (24”) apart to allow room for plants to spread as they mature. After planting, water thoroughly and deeply to settle the soil.
Water Iresine regularly throughout active growth when the soil becomes dry to the touch and throughout periods of drought. Reduce the amount of water provided during autumn and winter. Pinch out the tips to promote a bushier and dense growth habit. Protect plants from frost and cold weather by transplanting or moving them to a suitable environment such as a greenhouse or conservatory.
