Ipheion are small bulbous perennials with onion-scented foliage and sweet honey-scented star-shaped flowers that bloom in late winter and spring. They are well-suited to planting in containers, borders and beds and beneath trees. They can also be naturalised on a lawn. You should expect to see your Ipheion grow to an approximate height of up to 10-50cm (4-20in), depending on the variety.
Ipheion are best planted in a moist but well-drained fertile soil of sand, loam, chalk or clay (this differs depending on the variety) within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. They are best planted in a position of full sun.
If temperatures drop below -10°C, provide a protective winter mulch. Divide in summer once established which should be done after the foliage has died down.
It is possible to propagate Ipheion by seed sown in containers in a cold frame as soon as ripe or in spring. Can also be propagated by division in summer when dormant.
