Indigofera are deciduous or evergreen trees or shrubs, herbaceous perennials or annuals. Most varieties have long attractive pendants of pea-like blooms and feathery foliage that create a mound of billowing, weed-suppressing groundcover throughout summer and autumn. They are best located in flower beds and borders within cottage, informal and courtyard garden settings. You should expect to see your Indigofera grow to an approximate height of 75cm (30”) and a spread of 90cm (36”).
Indigofera are best planted in well-drained soil of chalk, sand and loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. Choose a sheltered site in full sun as these plants will thrive in warmer temperatures during active growth. Prepare the planting area with sand to enhance the drainage and improve growing conditions. Dig a hole that is an adequate depth and width for the root ball and space each plant 1.2 -1.5m (4-5’) apart, watering the soil thoroughly and deeply.
Whilst Indigofera are young, they should be watered daily until they are better established and when the soil becomes dry to the touch. There is no need to feed Indigofera as they will absorb vital nutrients from the air. You may wish to prune Indigofera back to the basic framework during the spring to encourage vigorous new growth.
