Iberis are annual or perennial sub-shrubs with elegant, thin leaves and flat clusters of attractive white, pink or purple flowers that showcase divine displays during spring and summer. They are best suited to flower beds and borders within cottage and informal gardens or alternatively as container plants on your patios. You should expect to see Iberis grow to an approximate height and spread of 30-45cm (12-18”).
Iberis are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of loam, chalk and sand within an alkaline or neutral PH setting – they will also grow well in poorer soils although you may wish to supplement the planting area with a generous amount of organic matter. Mix in to the native soil thoroughly and dig a hole to accommodate the size of your plant, allowing adequate growing space between companion plants. Water thoroughly and deeply once planted to settle the soil into place. Iberis are best positioned in an area of full sun or part shade.
It is recommended to spread a layer of mulch around the base of your Iberis during the spring as this will promote moisture retention, whilst controlling the spread of weeds and supplementing the soil with vital nutrients. After the flowering period, you may wish to prune Iberis back by one half of its growth. Water Iberis regularly and keep the soil moist, taking care not to overwater as this will rot the root system.
It is possible to propagate Iberis by seed or hardwood cuttings.
