About Hypericum

Hypericum are annual or perennial shrubs or trees of either evergreen or deciduous distinction, dependant on variety. These plants create much interest with berry-like capsules that uncover to highlight bright showy flowers, adorning prominent stamens and ovate leaves. Hypericum look highly attractive grown on banks, slopes, flower beds and borders within an informal or cottage garden setting. You should expect to see Hypericum grow to an approximate height and spread of 90cm (36”). Please take care when handling Hypericum, as they are highly toxic if ingested into your system.

How to plant Hypericum

Hypericum are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of chalk, clay, sand or loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. Dig a hole that is twice the width and depth of the root ball. Supplement your soil with nutrients such as fish and bone and ensure that your plants are watered thoroughly to settle the soil into place. Hypericum should be positioned in an area of sheltered sunlight or part shade.

How to care for Hypericum

You should remove most of the older branches during spring, cutting out thicker stems that will encourage growth for the following season. Mulch with wood chips or similar material to help retain moisture levels and discourage any weeds from budding around your new growth – Please ensure the mulch is kept away from the main base of the plant as this can cause damage and decay. Unless the ground is naturally low in nutrients, there should be no further requirement to feed. It is recommended to maintain a consistent watering regime if conditions become dry.

How to propagate Hypericum

It is possible to propagate Hypericum by semi-hardwood cuttings.
