About Holboellia

Holboellia are evergreen climbing shrubs with twining stems and small flowers that bloom in spring, which are then followed by fruits during the autumn. They are more commonly known as Sausage Vine; due to these sausage-shaped fruits they produce in autumn. The plant has both male and female flowers on the same plant. Holboellia are well-suited to being planted in a wall-side border to climb up a wall. You should expect to see your Holboellia grow to an approximate height of up to 8m (26ft) and an approximate spread of up to 4m (13ft).

How to plant Holboellia

Holboellia are best planted in a well-drained soil of chalk, loam, sand or clay within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. They are best positioned in an area of sun or partial shade. Holboellia will tolerate shade but in order to flower, some sun is required.

How to care for Holboellia

RHS Pruning Group 11- No regular pruning is required, however you may wish to trim the plant down in spring to keep them contained to the space available. Do this by removing as much from the longer shoots as necessary.

How to propagate Holboellia

It is possible to propagate Holboellia by seed, layering or semi-hardwood cuttings.
