Heucherella are evergreen clump-forming perennials from the Saxifrage family that are hybrids, made by crossing Heuchera with Tiarella. Loved for their heart or ovate shaped leaves with contrasting veining, they give great foliage interest and make great groundcover. Small bell-shaped flowers adorn the plant from late spring/early summer to late summer. You should expect to see Heucherella grow to an approximate height and spread of 50cm (20in).
Heucherella should be planted in a fertile, moist but well-drained soil of loam or sand within a neutral or acidic PH soil type. Well-drained soil is crucial for these plants to prevent the roots from drowning. Heucherella are happy in either a sheltered or exposed site, in a position of sun or partial shade. They are ideal for planting in borders and containers too.
Heucherella are fully hardy, so do not require protection from frosts. To prevent rhizomes from rising to the surface, you may wish to apply a mulch each year and divide every few years, planting in fresh soil to keep the plant healthy.
It is possible to propagate Heucherella by division in the autumn or spring once the plant is established.
