Hesperozygis are herbaceous perennial shrubs or sub-shrubs that are native to South America and are a relative of the mint family. Hesperozygis are compact plants with extremely scented foliage and flowers that make the perfect garnish to a cocktail. Clusters of small, ovate leaves are held together on thin slender branches and are topped with delicate bell-shaped flowers. They are best suited to flower beds and borders or within pots and containers. You should expect to see Hesperozygis grow to an approximate height and spread of 25-35cm (10-14”).
Hesperozygis are best planted in well-drained soil within an acidic, neutral or alkaline PH balance. They are best positioned in a sheltered area of full sun or part shade, taking care that the foliage is protected from intense midday heat. Amend the planting area with a generous amount of organic matter and mix thoroughly to the native soil. Dig a hole that will accommodate the overall depth and width of your Hesperozygis, spreading the roots as you lower into the ground. Water thoroughly and deeply to settle the soil into place.
Water Hesperozygis well during the summer especially during periods of drought, reducing the volume of water provided during the winter. There should be no need to prune Hesperozygis but you should remove old, dead or damaged foliage to neaten the overall appearance of your shrub.
It is still unknown as to whether Hesperozygis can be propagated. Therefore, there are no known methods at this current time.
