Hesperis are biennial and perennial plants, native to mainland Europe and areas of Asia. Beautiful clusters of fragrant, purple, cream or white flowers adorn stately stems and large leafy foliage during spring and summer. These plants are rich in nectar and are highly attractive to bees and butterflies. Hesperis are suited to flower beds and borders within coastal, cottage and wildlife garden settings. You should expect to see your plants grow to an approximate height and spread of 50cm (20”).
Hesperis are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of sand, clay, chalk or loam within an alkaline or neutral PH balance. Prepare the planting area by amending the soil with a generous layer of compost. Mix in well and position your plants into place, allowing enough space between companion plants. Settle the native soil and water thoroughly and deeply to encourage the development of a strong root system. Hesperis are best located in an area of full sun or part shade.
Hesperis will require a regular watering schedule to keep the soil consistently moist. Deadhead plants regularly to prolong the flowering period and pinch out the tips to encourage a bushier habit. If you would like Hesperis to self-seed, allow some of the seed heads to develop and eventually drop.
