Hemerocallis, or the more commonly known 'daylily' are evergreen or herbaceous perennial plants with narrow, strap-shaped leaves and large trumpet-shaped blooms that greet your gardens from late spring until summer. Hemerocallis are best suited to flower beds and pots with city, courtyard and cottage gardens. You should expect to see your Hemerocallis grow to an approximate height of 1m (40") and a spread of 50cm (20").
Hemerocallis are best planted in moist, well-drained soil although will tolerate poorer and heavy soil such as clay. Amend the soil with compost and space 30cm (12”) apart with the crown just over an inch or so beneath the soil surface. Firm the soil into place and water thoroughly. If planting in containers, mix compost to improve the native soil as this will improve moisture retention. Position in an area exposed to full sun or part shade as Hemerocallis do not approve of heavy shade.
You may wish to deadhead Hemerocallis after flowering to improve their appearance, but it is not necessary. They do not require pruning, staking or training as they can retain a strong and healthy structure without further aid.
