Heliotropium are annuals, perennials, sub-shrubs or shrubs displaying attractive foliage, each showcasing beautiful and finely etched veins, dark slender stems and clusters of small and often sweetly scented blooms. Heliotropium are best suited to flower beds and borders within courtyard, cottage and informal garden settings. You should expect to see Heliotropium grow to an approximate height and spread of 45cm.
Heliotropium are best planted in fertile, moist and well-drained soil. Due to a low level of hardiness it is possible to keep your Heliotropium in a greenhouse or within your home as a house plant. If kept within the home or under glass, you should grow your plants in loam based compost in full sunlight. If you are to position Heliotropium outdoors, grow in any moist, well-draining soil in full sun.
Heliotropium should be watered at a controlled rate during active growth, yet the soil must be kept moist – this implies to plants grown both indoors and outdoors. During winter, it is necessary to keep the root ball moist to promote improved growth for varieties that are due to re-appear next season. Ensure you apply a balanced fertiliser once a month to encourage optimum health and growth.
