Heliopsis are strong perennial plants with tall, erect stems and attractive lance-shaped foliage. Above the divine foliage sits large sunflower – like blooms in cheerful shades of yellow and orange throughout summer and autumn. Heliopsis are best suited to flower beds and borders within cottage, informal and prairie garden styles. They will also make fantastic cut flowers for the home. You should expect to see Heliopsis grow to an approximate height of 1-1.5m (3-5’) and a spread of 30cm (12”).
Heliopsis are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of sand, loam, chalk or clay within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. Amend the soil with a generous amount of compost and mix thoroughly with the native soil. Dig a hole that is as deep and twice as wide as the root ball, spacing companion plants 45-60cm (18-24”) apart. Back fill the planting area and water thoroughly and deeply. Make sure Heliopsis are positioned in an area of full sun, where they will thrive to optimum effect.
Heliopsis are low maintenance plants which require very little care when fully established. Deadhead spent blooms at the end of autumn to encourage a profusion of blooms – this will also stop them from re-seeding. You may wish to stake some varieties to retain a healthy size and structure, especially for those in exposed areas. Water plants regularly and make sure the soil is kept consistently moist but not waterlogged.
